Guide To Writing A Novel – A Guide To Writing Your Book
Many people have a dream of writing their own best-seller and seeing their name on the cover of a book at their local book store. But to begin this process, it often helps to have a guide to writing a novel. After all, it is always easier when you can lay out your plans in this step-by-step manner and just follow from point A to point B.
So to help you get started, here is a plan you can follow, sort of a “novel-writing road map,” if you will.
1. Define your story into a one concise sentence. This sounds very simple, doesn’t it? You’ll be very surprised just how difficult this is, especially for a new novelist. Usually the reason for this is the beginning writer often only has a vague idea of what their book is going to be about, so when asked to sum it all up into one sentence they find this near to impossible. So be sure you do know just what your novel will be about and go ahead and come up with your one-sentence summary.
2. Now, once you have completed the first step, you can go ahead and expand that on out into a whole paragraph. Give more details on the actual plot and the story line (but still you are only doing a paragraph or two), and then also summarize how you expect your book to end. Here again, some new authors find it a problem deciding how to end their story. A good rule of thumb though is to never begin writing any story if you are not absolutely sure of the ending. You will invariably paint yourself right into a pickle.
3. Next step will be to make a list of your main and secondary characters and write a page on each of them about their story line, what happens to them through the story, their expected conflicts, and how they end up.
4. Now take your single paragraph from step two and create an outline for your novel from it. If you wish, you can break it down into chapters, and keep in mind also what you wrote in step three. You may run into some plot snafus here, and if so go ahead and work them out. Better to deal with them in the outline stage than halfway through your manuscript. Make your outline as detailed as you wish.
5. All you need to do now is fill in the blanks. You will be amazed how easy it is to write your novel with a guide like this completely filled out. It is almost as easy as connecting the dots. Just follow along with your outline, work daily on your book, and you will have a finished manuscript ready to send to the publisher before you know it.
Follow these simple steps and you should be well on your way to getting that first novel started.
