What is a safe, affordable self-publisher for my novels? Do Bamm.com or Barnes and Noble offer self-pub?
I have been working on this book for years and I am going to spend another fall and winter trying to get it published. What reputable self-publisher would be the most affordable. I do NOT want to do EBOOK…I want real, in hand, copies of my book but as affordable as possible.
Any idea who publised Eragon before it was picked up by..I think Random House?
If by “trying to get it published” you plan to send it to commercial publishing houses, I’m with you all the way. Most writers want to get lots of readers and some pay for their work, and that is the way to go!
It can take longer than the time limit you’ve imposed.
Most first novels should be workshopped, beta-read, and get as many rewrites and as much polish as possible before you start shopping for a publisher or agent. Feedback can make all the dif between a rejection letter (no one escapes those) and acceptance.
But then you indicate you will self-publish. And I have to ask why?
If you’re worried some editor will mangle your words, then don’t. If the book is that flawed they won’t buy it in the first place.
If you think you’ll lose your copyright, that won’t happen. It belongs to you for your lifetime + 70 years. The publisher registers it for you at the US copyright office, too.
What you “lease” to any publisher are the “print rights” to your work. You’re giving them permission to print the book for a set period of time (two years) or until the book goes out of print.
Let’s talk sales:
Most self-pub books never sell more than 5-10 copies. Seriously. The vast majority don’t even sell that many.
ERAGON was a fluke that ONLY happened because the writer and his family worked their bums off to promote it, then a pro writer recommended them to his publisher. They used Lighting Source. I don’t know if LS is reputable or not or if there are upfront costs.
“Paolini and his family toured across the United States to promote the book. Over 135 talks were given at bookshops, libraries, and schools,(snip) the book did not receive much attention.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eragon
Such tours come out of your own pocket and rarely ever see a return + profit.
“American novelist Carl Hiaasen was on vacation in one of the cities that Paolini gave a talk in. While there, his stepson bought a copy of Eragon that he “immediately loved”. He showed it to his stepfather, who brought the book to the attention of the publishing house Alfred A. Knopf.”
ERAGON GOT A LUCKY BREAK, else you would never have heard of it, ever.
You have a better chance of being eaten by a shark while in a backyard kiddie pool than to have a pro walk in on your signing and help you out like that. If his kid hadn’t been along, he’d have walked right past.
What runs through the mind when a pro writer sees a self-pub book is, “Hey, if your book is THAT good, why couldn’t you sell it to a commercial publisher? Did you even bother to try???”
REPUTABLE SELF-PUBLISHING VENUES:
Lulu.com allows you to upload a file, the cover art, and sell from your Lulu “store front” for FREE. They use Print On Demand technology. The book is only printed and shipped when someone orders a copy.
If the book costs 5.00 to print, you sell it for 7.00 + shipping and make a 2.00 “royalty” for each one sold. But if you only sell 5-10 copies that’s not a lot of payback for your years of work.
If you decide to self-pub–get feedback! Polish, re-polish, rewrite, and get MORE feedback. However hard you’ve already worked on it doesn’t mean it will automatically be a good read. You have to put on your game face and get input.
AVOID PUBLISHAMERICA. Seriously. They pretend to be a real publisher, but are in truth what’s called a “print mill.”
There are no upfront costs–they get you AFTER you are locked fast into their horrible 7-year contract. All the costs come later when they try to sell you overpriced, shoddy copies of your own book and charge you money to remove errors they themselves put in. Google their name + “scam” to see the lives/careers they’ve ruined with their nasty bait and switch con game.
ALWAYS Google the name of a prospective publishing venue + “scam” or “complaints” to see if anyone has had problems with them.
AVOID WORTHY OF PUBLISHING. It’s a total waste of time.
